Every once in a while we ship something that exceeds even our own standards for vintage. Sure, vintage jeans show up occasionally, a particularly rare t-shirt or shell cordovan shoes. But the simple fact is that there’s just not that much left in the world like this vintage chore coat from Carter’s.

Hi Erik,
Thanks for subscribing to Comma, the Vintage Menswear Subscription Service! Here’s what you get:
Selvage Chore Coat: Every once in a while we ship something that, for lack of euphemism, is irresponsible. And that’s what we’re doing here: A deadstock chore coat with blanket lining from Carter’s (watch the wear!) a legendary workwear manufacturer once based in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and now, much like Osh Kosh, a passed-around trademark for children’s clothing.
But it wasn’t always that way. Back before supply chain technology, you had to get your workwear from somewhere close. So, it was much easier to get from Carter’s than Carhartt if you lived in New England. Most of it, of course, was worn to rags. That’s what it was built for, after all. All this to say how exceedingly rare it is to find a piece of true vintage workwear in deadstock condition.I date this one to the 1960s or so, based on the style of tag and presence of rayon in the wool-blend. My favorite detail, though, is that it’s made with selvage denim, and the green-line ID runs right along the edge. A truly rare, truly vintage piece that I’m proud to share with you.
