10 Good Reasons Why You Should Wear Vintage Clothing

Why should you wear vintage clothing? Here’s a few reasons.

Making the leap from new clothing to vintage can be a bit tough for some people. “What if it smells!” they say, or “I’ll look silly!”

Thankfully, washing machines and style tips exist. But if you’re looking for motivation, we here at Comma Vintage think there’s a lot more to it.

1. Vintage clothing prevents human exploitation

Ryan’s Box: Vintage Levi’s 505-0217XX and a chunky ragg sweater!

Chunky Sweater with vintage Levi's 501s

We always get excited when we’re able to match a subscribers expectations. Ryan, for example, asked for light wash denim and chunky sweaters to get him through the San Francisco spring. We’re glad that we had these 1980s 505-0217 XX in stock to go with a snowflake pattern sweater in otherwise un-dyed wool. Sadly, the jeans were a bit too small. But hey, we work with that. The author’s pair of vintage Levi’s 501XX, dated to the early 1990s. If you look closely, you’ll notice that they’re absolutely beautiful and perfect.

The Levi’s 501XX is my and many others’ favorite piece of clothing. It’s about as reliable and timeless and perfect as it gets, and has a well-documented, culturally significant history.

And for that reason, many, many, many people have already written awesome things about Levi’s 501s, and they know a heck of a lot more than I do. Here’s a bunch of interesting links Continue reading

A Guide to Buying Vintage Levi’s Trucker Jackets on eBay

Levi's Denim Trucker Jacket 70506 Size 38

This is what a Levi’s denim trucker jacket looks like on my floor.

This guide is for buying a jacket at a reasonable price and for regular wear. I’m writing for myself, I suppose, and for anyone else looking for an affordable and interesting addition to their wardrobe.

The jacket’s history is well-documented, though, and it’s worth investigating. If you’re interested in collecting and in the historicism of the garment, Denim Hunters has an awesome guide to dating Levi’s jackets.

If you just want to grab a nice jacket, though, keep reading. Most links will bring you to a relevant eBay search.  Continue reading

Alan’s Levi’s Silver Tab (Not Silvertab) Jeans & Sports Illustrated Crewneck

Levi's silvertab jeans and Sports Illustrated crewneck

Levi’s Silvertab is one of those many, many Levi’s sub-brands that had a moment and then faded away. I don’t anticipate LVC ever bringing it back. Of course, this isn’t actual Levi’s Silvertab–which had unique branding throughout, including a black rear patch. These are just a pair of Levi’s that have a silver tab. And lots more, too. Here’s what I wrote to the subscriber:  Continue reading

Alexander’s Box: A Made in Canada Levi’s Trucker

Made in Canada Levi's Trucker

I wish there were more vintage Levi’s Trucker Jackets in the world. I’ve got a few I keep to myself, but I get excited when one pops up to be shared. No one’s ever disappointed, it seems. This one features the numeric sizing of the late 80s but, incidentally, is made in Canada. The good news is I love Canada. The other news is the jacket’s gone to Sweden. Steven mentioned that he’s into punk and classic rock, but he’s also not a teenager. So we shipped him some classics that we hope fit the aesthetic. Unfortunately, the jeans didn’t work out! The tape mentioned in the letter, if you’re curious, is Hot Rocks, a Rolling Stones compilation. And that magazine under it all is from the fifties. It contains the lyrics to dozens of popular-at-the-moment country songs. Continue reading
